Genetic Factors for Glaucoma in the OHTS; Risk, Progression and Mechanism
ABSTRACT Glaucoma is a common cause of severe vision loss, characterized by the progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells. Several large genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) have been performed to date and have discovered over 127 risk factor genes. The mechanism by which these genes lead to POAG is almost completely unknown. Our proposal seeks to 1) translate these risk factor gene discoveries into useful data for patients and their doctors and 2) determine the mechanisms by which risk factor genes confer risk.
