Molecular and cellular mechanisms of inhibitory synapse development

The goal of the proposed research is to discover new mechanisms underlying the development of hyperactive neuronal networks in the brain. Hyperactivity of neuronal networks due to the loss or impaired function of inhibitory neurons can lead to neural dysfunctions and seizures. Both impaired inhibition and glial dysfunctions have been linked to several neurodevelopmental disorders including autism. Autism is an increasingly prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 1 in 59 children in the United States.
