Cooking skills to improve long-term weight loss in young adults with intellectual disabilities
ABSTRACT Young adults with ID (age 18-26 yrs.) especially those with Down syndrome, are an underserved population with a high prevalence of obesity (~45% by age 30), obesity related health conditions, and a reduced ability to complete instrumental/basic activities of daily living (I/ADLs). Young adults with ID no longer have the daily structure of attending public school with access to specialized medical services, may spend more time at home or residential day centers, begin to live independent of their parents, or to work outside the home which may all contribute to increased consumption of fast/processed higher calorie foods and decreased PA leading to accelerated weight gain.
