Climate Change and Longitudinal Lung Function
PROJECT SUMMARY Human lung function is determined by a complex combination of both genetic and environmental factors. Climate change is an environmental factor with the potential to affect lung health on a large scale. While transient changes in local weather have been associated with increased rates of asthma and COPD exacerbations, less is known about the effects of climate on long-term respiratory outcomes. A prior retrospective cross-sectional study has shown that warmer ambient air temperatures are associated with lower lung function in a general healthy U.S. population (NHANES), which may have implications given climate change.
