Folic Acid Supplementation and Colitis-associated Colon Carcinogenesis
Project Summary/Abstract Patients with ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease, face an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. Although advances have been made in the therapeutic management of this disease, much less attention has been given to the development of cancer preventive strategies for this high-risk population. Ulcerative colitis patients often develop folate deficiencies that require supplementation with folic acid (FA), a synthetic form of folate. The effect of FA on risk for colorectal cancer remains unclear and the recent suggestion that FA supplements may be useful in preventing colitis-associated colorectal cancer is of great concern.
