Stress, Weathering, and Blood-Based Biomarkers of Alzheimer’s Disease
Worldwide, over 50 million people have dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) accounting for as much as 70% of all cases. Recently, the NIA in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association has proposed a biological definition of AD based on the underlying pathological processes of amyloid (A), phosphorylated tau (T), and neurodegeneration (N). Notably, blood-based biomarkers of AT(N) are now available for use in observational studies and for clinical utilization. Unfortunately, African Americans have rarely been included in studies of AD or investigations of the AT(N) framework.
