There is a glaring gap in climate change adaptation science: Research shows that climate impacts are sharply increasing, and that current adaptation is not fast and deep enough to avert rising risks, particularly in adaptation frontiers such as coastal cities. However, theoretical and empirical knowledge is lacking on whether and how adaptation goals and concrete targets – heavily used in climate change mitigation and other policy fields – can accelerate and deepen adaptation action and help to avoid maladaptation.
