Climate change, and thus environmental change, is one of the major challenges of all life forms. This was particularly the case in the Late Pleistocene (129,000–11,700 years ago), when the amplitude, frequency and severity of climate change was intense, making environmental conditions unpredictable and unprecedented. Animals respond differently to these challenges – affecting adaptability, ecological tolerance and behaviour. In the history of our species in Europe, these challenges became most pronounced in the period leading up to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).
