Religion and Its Others in South Asia and the World: Communities, Debates, Freedoms

Atheists are now being targeted as a distinct minority by religious extremists. This is most dramatically true in the countries of South Asia. However, the effects of this violence extend beyond this region: large numbers of atheists from South Asia now seek asylum in European countries. In consequence, these countries are now debating whether, or to what extent, atheism can be a legitimate reason for granting asylum. The global rise of religious violence and extremism, especially after 9/11, has been intensively studied from a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives.
