Human actions are eroding biodiversity, and consequently reducing the contributions nature provides to people. A strong focus has been put on investigating the direct drivers of biodiversity loss, such as land use change, and their impacts on biodiversity. However, real transformative change requires understanding the sociocultural, economic, and other indirect drivers of biodiversity loss that enable direct drivers. Particularly, we lack knowledge on how societal values of nature and human behaviour underpin these indirect drivers.
