Fundamentals of Hydrogen in Structural Metals at the Atomic Scale
H is an element that plays an increasingly important role in the production and efficient usage of energy. Besides its direct use as an energy source, it significantly influences the way we produce and consume energy in an indirect way: In high-strength materials (Rm > 1000 MPa), the usability and service life is regularly limited by H embrittlement. These materials are key in leightweighting transport systems, wind power generation and H storage systems. Despite the enormous economic significance, very little is known experimentally about the underlying mechanisms, which are inherently playing out on the atomic scale.
