Single Molecule Nanoscale Sensors for Improved Therapies and Diagnostics
Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease, affecting over 6 million people worldwide with an economic burden estimated to be greater than £3B per year in the UK alone. Both the prevalence and economic costs are expected to double by 2040. Available therapies rely on regulating dopamine concentration in the brain to ease symptoms, at the cost of serious side effects as the disease advances. For effective treatment in more severe stages, real-time monitoring of dopamine concentrations is crucial.
