Demystifying the Quark-Gluon Plasma
The primary objective of this project is to explore the properties of a new state of matter, the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), at the highest energies to date. The QGP consists of asymptotically free quarks and gluons and the evidence for its discovery was announced in experiments analyzing collisions of heavy ions. Previous experiments at lower energies have caused a dramatic change of paradigm in our understanding - measurements at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider showed that the QGP behaves like a strongly coupled liquid, instead of the weakly interacting gas expected by theorists.
