Improving Prognosis by using innovative methods to diAgnose Causes of Encephalitis
Background: Encephalitis is a severe inflammation of the brain that can be caused by viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms, or autoimmune disease. The impact is high: the case fatality rate is 10-20% and half of patients have neurological deficits. Identifying the cause of encephalitis is essential for early initiation of therapy and thereby improves outcome. The clinical challenge: Current diagnostics for encephalitis are insufficient. My prospective pilot study showed that the cause of encephalitis could be identified in only half of patients.
