Molecular mechanisms through which oocytes evade ageing
Female germ cells, oocytes, are remarkable in their ability to survive for long periods of time, up to 50 years in humans, and retain the ability to give rise to a young organism. We know surprisingly little about the molecular mechanisms through which oocytes alleviate cellular ageing for decades, and why such mechanisms eventually fail with advanced age. The goal of this research proposal is to combine biochemical perturbations with imaging and the state-of-the-art -omics techniques to reveal both the mechanisms dormant oocytes employ to maintain cellular fitness and how ageing affects these mechanisms.
